Local campaigner Vikki Slade selected to as Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
A packed meeting on Saturday afternoon saw Cllr Vikki Slade selected, from a strong field of candidates, to represent the Mid Dorset and North Poole Liberal Democrats at the next General Election. Vikki is fully committed to serving all residents within the Mid Dorset and North Poole constituency.
Following her selection Vikki said: "I am humbled that the members of Mid Dorset and North Poole Liberal Democrats have given me their trust to stand as their candidate for the next General Election. This part of Dorset deserves an MP who will stand up for their needs, help build a sustainable future for the young people and protect services for the vulnerable.
"I am ready to take on that challenge whenever a General Election is called and can assure residents that their needs will come first."
Vikki Slade, who fought the 2015 and 2017 General Elections, is a committed and passionate campaigner, a high-profile opposition member of Poole Council and a member of the Liberal Democrat’s Regional Executive. In her hustings speech she stated she was proud that during the Liberal Democrat’s time in Government they were able to introduce Pupil Premium and high-quality apprenticeships to improve the chances of children and young people. The Tories have now reduced the effectiveness of these through the Apprenticeship Levy and cuts, in real terms, to Pupil Premium. She is keen to establish a real funding boost for our schools and to promote a wider curriculum, so all children can achieve their potential and have the skills for future employment. As a former businesswoman she also understands that strong economic growth is vital to everyone in Mid Dorset and North Poole but is keen to ensure everyone benefits, not just those who are already succeeding.
Vikki said: "I have campaigned passionately to protect our NHS in Dorset and will continue to stand up for those who have been let down - especially in the area of mental health and in social care. I support both the Liberal Democrat policy of adding 1p to income tax for NHS and Social Care and changing the way social care is funded, so the current crisis can be dealt with nationally rather than at local level.
"Currently, Vikki works for a local charity raising the profile of children and adults with disabilities and developing projects to improve their care and support. As a member of Poole Council, Vikki has been involved in a number of projects including Anti-bullying Strategy, scrutinising and improving the standards in Children’s Centres and in social care commissioning, working to improve provision for victims of Domestic Abuse and has been a leading voice on environmental and renewable energy issues."
Vikki went on to say: "I understand the conflict we face in the housing crisis - protecting our green belt and countryside whilst providing truly affordable homes, especially for young people. I am committed to working with communities and supporting Neighbourhood Forums and other groups to find solutions that work for us all. Homelessness is an issue that needs to be urgently addressed and I am passionate about putting compassion back into politics."
